Bridging the ethereal world of ancient chants and lush vocals resting comfortably between surgically chopped samples and digitized sounds, Durban born Umaah’s Sheila EP (after the artist’s grandmother) is an introduction to a plethora of new soundscapes. The tracks explore various subjects and cross-pollinate genres such as hip hop, electronica, soul and jazz. The 4 track EP is a cornucopia of aural collisions. The collision between two distant generations of African womxnhood; Between urban and rural forms of protest music; and between the folkloric warmth of oral tradition juxtaposed to the cold synthetic precision of beat machines. “Sheila” features an appearance by Tribal Rebel Ludi and production from Micr.Pluto and Eye-on Feather, take a listen below and The EP is also available to buy on Bandcamp
